WITTMANN, Ariz. — A cat nursing three Chihuahua puppies was among more than 70 animals removed from an overcrowded mobile home, authorities said.
Maricopa County sheriff's deputies removed 54 dogs and 19 cats Wednesday from the home of 71-year-old John Koepke, subject of a 2011 animal-hoarding case that prohibited him from owning or possessing animals until May of this year, according to the sheriff's office.
Details of the 2011 case were not immediately available.
When deputies arrived Wednesday morning at Koepke's home, about 35 miles northwest of Phoenix, he refused to surrender his animals, calling them "his children."

The conditions in which the animals lived were unsanitary with feces on the floors and walls and a dead cat inside the home, Sheriff Joe Arpaio said. Several animals also required medical attention.
Deputies were surprised to find one cat nursing the Chihuahua puppies.
"At least the cat was saving some animals," Arpaio said. "I won't say the same thing for this guy."
Koepke will face up to 72 counts of failing to provide adequate shelter, Arpaio said. Charges could be added pending a veterinarian's evaluation.
