Four decades on, the feud between Donald Rumsfeld and George H.W. Bush continues to burn.
In an interview Monday on NBC's Today show, Rumsfeld dismissed the elder*Bush's criticism of his tenure as President George W. Bush's Defense secretary, and in the process took a poke at the struggling 2016*presidential campaign of Jeb Bush.
"I didn't think it was very complimentary of his son, George W. Bush, and I didn't think it was very helpful to his other son, who is*running for president," Rumsfeld said of the senior Bush's attacks. "So I thought it was kind of a strange thing for him to be doing."
As for why Jeb Bush's campaign seems to be struggling, Rumsfeld told Today's Matt Lauer:*"I suppose there are some people that are uncomfortable with a dynasty."
In a biography published late last year, the senior Bush said Rumsfeld ill-served his son:*“I don’t like what he did, and I think it hurt the President, having his iron-ass view of everything. I’ve never been that close to him anyway. There’s a lack of humility, a lack of seeing what the other guy thinks."
At the time of the book's release. Rumsfeld had an even more pungent reaction to H.W. Bush's criticisms: "Bush 41 is getting up in years and misjudges Bush 43, who I found made his own decisions."
The Bush-Rumsfeld feud goes back at least to Gerald Ford's presidency (1974-77), as each of the then-up-and-coming young Republicans jockeyed for position. Bush believes that Rumsfeld blocked his chances to be appointed Ford's vice president.
Rumsfeld did agree with the elder Bush on one point when asked about the ex-president's criticism.
"We were never close," Rumsfeld said.**"He was kind of 'to the manor born' — and I wasn't."
Rumseld*also commented on another 2016 Republican candidate: Donald Trump. He said the GOP front-runner "has a touched a nerve in our country."
