Russian airstrikes in Syria*are targeting Islamic State militants and other "well known"*groups, a*spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday.
The airstrikes have destroyed 12 Islamic State*targets*including a command center and two arms depots*since they began Wednesday, the*Associated Press reported.
The airstrikes drew*sharp rebuke from the United States and further raised*tensions in the region.*Moscow*insisted it was targeting Islamic State militants while U.S. officials and others said it appeared to be attacking opposition groups fighting Syrian government forces.
Speaking to reporters Thursday, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia is targeting*a*list of other groups,*as well as*the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL,*the*AP*reported.

“These organizations are well known and the targets are chosen in coordination with the armed forces of Syria,” Peskov*said without giving specific names, according to the AP.
Putin*denied reports that civilians were killed in the*strikes, calling the allegations "information attacks" in a meeting at the Kremlin on Thursday.
Russian Ambassador to France Alexander Orlov said his country is targeting*the same extremists as the United States and denied*claims by the U.S. that Russia's*military failed to coordinate the airstrikes, the AP reported. Orlov*said the targets were ISIL and the Nusra Front, al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria.
The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed U.S. officials, reported that one of the airstrikes hit an area mainly held by rebels backed by the CIA and allied spy services.*The CIA has been arming and training rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime since 2013.
Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said the country*will inform “interested parties, including the United States” about the bombing campaign, the TASS news agency reported.
Defense Secretary Ashton Carter on Wednesday called Russian policy in Syria "ill-advised" and said it was "doomed to fail."
The Russian defense ministry said late Wednesday that Russia carried out 20 airstrikes, and released video footage:
