San Francisco police on Friday detained a man in relation to a suitcase full of body parts left downtown earlier this week.
The man matched the "person of interest" photos released by officials. Police Chief Greg Suhr said the man was detained in the Tenderloin neighborhood at 7:30 p.m. PT, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
The man's detention comes as the result of an anonymous tip. He was staying in a downtown apartment building, and another person in that apartment was also detained for questioning, according to KNTV-TV. Officials did not comment on the second person.
The detaining of the man comes after police questioned and released several other people following Wednesday's gruesome discovery. Police responded to reports of a suspicious package just a block away from Twitter headquarters. They found a rolling suitcase, and inside, body parts so mutilated that they couldn't tell whether they were human or animal.
The city's medical examiner's office confirmed that the parts belonged to a human. The race and gender of the victim is unknown.
A DNA laboratory will examine the remains to identify the person, The Associated Press reported.
Other human remains were found in the surrounding blocks, but officials said it was unclear whether they belonged to one victim.
