The massive blizzard hammering the East Coast brought more than just snow and wind as New Jersey streets filled with water and ice from major coastal flooding from the storm Saturday.
"There's the storm, and<span style="color: Red;">*</span>you got the full moon which is causing the unusually high tides anyway, and that combination is producing a lot of flooding along the coast from the mid-Atlantic and eventually on up into New England," said Tom Kines, senior meteorologist with Accuweather.
"Obviously this is a ferocious storm. There are wind gusts 60 to 80 mph. That's hurricane stuff."
Already hit by power outages that left more than 90,000 residents in the dark, largely along the coast, the state was facing coastal winds up to 75 mph and ocean swells from 10 to 15 feet at high tide.
Back bay flooding and beach erosion was expected from ocean swells generated by high winds. "The tides have been running like 3 to 4 feet above normal and that's highly unusual," Kines said.
Cape May at the southern tip of New Jersey was being hit hard during high tide, Gov.<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Chris Christie said. He described "significant street flooding" there. Renewed storm surge and flooding was expected during high tide Saturday evening.
New Jersey meteorologist Gary Szatkowski tweeted the Cape May area was experiencing a record high surge of 8.9 feet, greater than when Sandy hit. Lewes, Del., across the mouth of the Delaware River from Cape May, also reported a record high surge of 9.7 feet.
