A Supreme Court justice’s suggestion that*some African-American students belong in less-rigorous schools than white students at*Wednesday’s oral arguments for Fisher v. University of Texas*is being drowned out by a tremendous surge*of support for UT, including a new hashtag:*#StayMadAbby.
Abigail Fisher, a white student who*was rejected from the university, sued the school for violating the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth amendment. The*decision to rehear the case, which*began in 2008 after she was denied admittance, came this summer.
On Wednesday, according to the transcript, Justice Antonin Scalia said, “There are those who contend that it does not benefit African-Americans to get them into the University of Texas where they do not do well, as opposed to having them go to a less-advanced school, a less — a slower-track school where they do well.”
Now, it’s being reported that more*than 65 groups have submitted amicus curiae*(Latin for “friends of the court”)*briefs*to the U.S. Supreme Court backing UT Austin’s position.*UT News*notes that*they include ones from*a group representing Fortune 100 companies and other leading businesses — such as*Apple, Starbucks, Sprint and Procter & Gamble — plus Ivy League universities, and U.S. congressmen.*
Also filing a friend of the court brief was the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, which says it has “long played a key role in the litigation*of this case.” Its brief was filed on behalf of the Black Student Alliance (BSA) and the Black Ex-Student Alliance (BEST).
As the legal wheels churn, the #StayMadAbby hashtag has been trending as people of all ages use it to demonstrate their support of UT’s decision.

This old white chick has had enough of this nonsense. You didn't get in because you didn't make the grade. Sit down. Be quiet. #StayMadAbby
