BOULDER —*Jurors are deciding the fate of a woman accused of using Craigslist to lure a pregnant woman to her basement and then cutting the baby from her.
The unborn baby girl died, and expectant mother Michelle Wilkins suffered serious injuries in the March 18, 2015, knife attack a few miles outside of Boulder.
Prosecutors say suspect Dynel Lane told family members she was pregnant, and tried to steal Wilkins’ baby for herself. Wilkins was attacked with a knife, a lava lamp and Lane's bare hands, investigators said.
Jurors are deciding whether to convict Lane on charges of attempted first-degree murder, assault and unlawful termination of a pregnancy. Her attorneys argue Lane should instead be convicted of attempted manslaughter, pointing to the disorganized crime scene. Jurors deliberated for about four hours without reaching a resolution, and will return Tuesday morning.
"None of it was planned, prepared or processed," defense attorney Kate Harald said. "This wasn't her intent.”
Prosecutors say Lane’s behavior proves she intended from the start to kill Wilkins and steal the baby, which Wilkins planned to name Aurora. Nothing was accidental, said District Attorney Stan Garnett.
"Do not leave your common sense outside the jury room," he urged jurors.
