AUSTIN -- A Texas father and his 11-year-old son were among the scores of people killed when a truck plowed into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Nice, France, on Thursday, according to family members and friends.<span style="color: Red;">*</span>
Sean Copeland, 51, and his son Brodie, 11, were celebrating Bastille Day in France,<span style="color: Red;">*</span>a<span style="color: Red;">*</span>spokeswoman for the family told the<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Austin<span style="color: Red;">*</span>American-Statesman.<span style="color: Red;">*</span>The<span style="color: Red;">*</span>U.S. State Department confirmed<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Friday that two vacationing Americans were among those killed.
“We are heartbroken and in shock over the loss of Brodie Copeland, an amazing son and brother who lit up our lives, and Sean Copeland, a wonderful husband and father,” the family said in a statement, the newspaper reported.<span style="color: Red;">*</span>“They are so loved.”
The driver of a white commercial truck paved his way into a pedestrian-only area Thursday<span style="color: Red;">*</span>killing at least 84 people and injuring 50 others<span style="color: Red;">*</span>as crowds watched Bastille Day fireworks.
Nieces and cousins of Copeland and his son,<span style="color: Red;">*</span>have posted on Facebook and Twitter confirming that the father and son were killed in<span style="color: Red;">*</span><span style="color: Red;">*</span>the<span style="color: Red;">*</span>attack.
Haley Copeland said in a<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Facebook post that the pair<span style="color: Red;">*</span>were traveling with their family as part of a birthday celebration.
“Losing a loved one is<span style="color: Red;">*</span>hard no matter the circumstances, but losing a love one ins<span style="color: Red;">*</span>such a tragic and unexpected way is unbearable,” Copeland said in the post.
Hill Country Baseball club, where Brodie played baseball,<span style="color: Red;">*</span>wrote<span style="color: Red;">*</span>in a Facebook post: "You are in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers. Rest in peace, Brodie and Sean, you will be remembered by many."
The consulate is urging<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Americans traveling in the city along the Mediterranean coast to contact relatives or family members to let them know they are safe. It also says they should "avoid the area, to monitor local press for updates, and to exercise caution if you are in the vicinity."
