The headline we didn't expect to write today: Joe a no-go on 2016 run
This is heavy, Doc. We're going to into the future election year without Uncle Joe. Despite breaking*on Back to the Future Day*— don'tcha*know*— this news*is big enough to*boot USA TODAY's coverage of Marty McFly's arrest below the fold or maybe even into Newsline. In case you were in a time warp, VP Biden ended months of speculation Wednesday when he announced in the Rose Garden that he wasn't making a run for the White House in 2016, which means Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders can slug*it out for the Democratic presidential nomination. Think you know*Joe? Check out these six things. Think you know Back to the Future? Check out these 15 things, then read up on what the movie got right and what it got wrong.*And check out USA TODAY on newsstands*Thursday for a remake of the original newspaper from the movie.

30 years ago, Marty McFly got a glimpse of what a day in 2015 was supposed to look like. Let's take a look and see what the movie's October 22nd newspaper got right, and what it didn't. USA TODAY

Subway's other advertising problem
First Jared, now the size of its subs. Subway has had a rough time with its promotions, and now*it's responding to a 2013 class-action lawsuit with a tape measure. What? Subway is measuring its footlong subs to guarantee that they're actually what the chain advertises: 12 inches long. The lawsuit alleges Subway's marketing for its 6-inch and footlong sandwiches was deceptive, and customers were served less food than they were paying for. Subway denies the claim, but it says all its stores will have a measurement tool and compliance inspections.

After being sued by customers for false advertising, Subway says it will start measuring its footlongs to ensure they're really twelve inches. Jen Markham (@jenmarkham) has the story. Buzz60

Isn't this sweet? Vladimir Putin got a visit from his BFF, Syrian President Bashar Assad
If you're gonna leave the country for the first time since 2011, why not visit the buddy backing your government army in the civil war that has torn your country apart? That's what Assad did when he had made a secret trip to Moscow to meet with the Russian president so the pals*could gab about their joint military campaign against rebels in Syria. (It's safe to say the U.S.*isn't too happy about the slumber party. And we gotta wonder if China's jealous?) ICYMI. Syria's civil war has killed at least 250,000 people, according to U.N. estimates. Assad says he's fighting terrorists, and Putin says he's just lending a hand, but it's so much more complicated than that.
It's getting chilly outside, but 2015 is still so hot
And likely to remain that way. Between man-made global warming and nature's El Niño, 2015 is on track to be the warmest year since records began in 1880 — smashing a record set just last year. So?*Not only that, it's almost certain*be the Earth's warmest year since the 600s! That's before the fall of the Mayan civilization and the Viking invasions of Europe. Wait.*How do we know that? Climate scientists can tell by analyzing*ice cores, lake sediments and tree rings to determine the air and sea temperatures of past millennia.
If you own a Toyota, read this
It's another recall. And this time it's worldwide and affects 6.5 million vehicles — about two-thirds of Toyota's annual global production! — and it covers some of the automaker's*most popular vehicles sold*from 2007 to 2011. What's wrong? It's an issue Toyota has had before, but this time*for different models. There's a defective power window switch that could short-circuit, overheat and melt, causing a fire. So far there have only been 11 incidents, but better safe than sorry.

If you only read one thing tonight:*Hillary Clinton takes a break from the campaign trail Thursday to testify*before a House committee about the 2012*attack in Benghazi, Libya,*and we're expecting a lot of drama.*Here's what you need to know.
