It's GOP debate night 2.0. Get ready for a Trump-Fiorina ruuuuuumble
Donald Trump. Carly Fiorina. Oh, and*nine other*candidates take the stage at 8 p.m. Wednesday*at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California. It*is widely expected to be a bare-knuckles brawl between*Trump and Fiorina, whose campaign was tracking upward after her performance in the last "undercard" debate, got a further*boost after Trump criticized her looks —*er, persona, as Trump later claimed —*in*a*Rolling Stone*interview. Our Magic 8 ball says GOP Throwdown 2.0*(The One Before Everyone Stops Caring) will go a little like this: Trump will say something snide about Fiorina. She’ll smile and verbally pat him on the head. Some other candidates will say some stuff (wait —*there are other people at this event?) but the analysis afterward will be all about Trump, Fiorina and gender politics. Needless to say,*we've got our popcorn ready.*(Don't forget the undercard debate with the remaining GOP candidates*that starts at 6 p.m.)*Add YOZINGER on Yo! for fun with, you guessed it, the zingers.*Follow along with @usatoday2016. And get your bingo cards ready!*Both debates will be on CNN and*live-streamed for free.
Twitter *—*including Barack and Hillary —*declares: #IStandWithAhmed
If you're going to be a high school freshman at the center of a*social media storm, it helps to have top-tier allies such as, you know, the president of the United States and a former-first-lady-turned-senator-turned-secretary-of-State-turned-Democratic-front-runner. You know, those kind of friends. Ahmed Mohamed, 14, is the lucky kid who has the support of President Obama and Hillary Clinton — as well as*the rest of Twitter.*So why all the love?*It all started when, Ahmed says,*he was suspended for three days*and questioned by police after officials at MacArthur High School in Texas mistook his homemade clock for a fake bomb. Ahmed — an engineering student who has won awards for his inventions — said he brought the clock to school to show an engineering teacher. Another teacher confiscated it, and then the police were called*but no charges were filed. Now the Dallas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations says he was targeted because of his religious and racial identity and they're concerned some of the student's rights may have been violated. In the meantime, Ahmed has*an*invitation to the White House*but there's*no word yet on when he'll visit.
Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It's what makes America great.

America's nurses still mad about being mocked on 'The View'
Miss Colorado*Kelley Johnson*didn't win the Miss America pageant. But she won our hearts with her monologue, wearing scrubs and a stethoscope. (You probably saw it all over your Facebook feed.) Well, two hosts of The View were not impressed. *“She came in in a nurse’s uniform, and basically read her emails out loud,” comedian and co-host Michelle Collins said of Johnson’s monologue, which told the story of “Joe,” an Alzheimer’s patient who made Johnson realize the importance of her role as his nurse. “Why does she have a doctor’s stethoscope on?” fellow co-host Joy Behar chimed in during the show. Nurses and other health care professionals were*—*and still are — really mad and*are venting using the*#NursesUnite hashtag on Twitter. Collins and Behar revisited their comments Wednesday and kinda-sorta apologized.

Miss Colorado Kelley Johnson performed a personal monologue in the talent portion of the Miss America competition. She shocked many when she walked on stage in her nurse scrubs. VPC
Study: Will work (happier) for (free) food*
When it comes to employee perks, few things are as simply satisfying as free food and drinks. As it turns out, it's also just good business. According to a new survey by grocery-delivery service Peapod, companies that provide free food have happier employees, compared with those who don't. Snacks may even lure potential*employees to new companies: 48% of respondents said that if they were looking for a new job, they would weigh company perks, including availability of snacks, in their decision. All this talk about food makes us here at #TheShortList hungry. BRB. We need Cheetos.

Hero pilot diverts trans-Atlantic flight to save Simba the French bulldog from freezing
Temperatures at high altitudes, of course, drop to dangerously low levels that —*without heat —*can endanger the lives of pets and humans. An Air Canada pilot is being lauded for diverting a Tel Aviv-to-Toronto*flight to Germany after the heating system in the plane's cargo area malfunctioned. Simba, a 7-year-old Frenchie, was traveling in the hold.*The pilot, who was not identified,*had Simba pulled from the Air Canada flight and placed on another Toronto-bound Air Canada flight from*Frankfurt.*The dog and grateful owner*German Kontorovich were eventually reunited in Tornoto. Cue the warm fuzzies.

It's not as swank as some of the cars we've seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but there's just something about that popemobile. Swipe through this gallery to see the popemobile then and now.
The popemobile is taken for a test drive through the streets of Havana, Cuba, on Sept. 14, 2015. For 85 years, popemobiles have been carrying popes through large crowds, making it easier for more people to see the leader of the Catholic Church in person.*(Photo: Ramon Espinosa, AP)
ARGH!!!**Is Jon Snow dead or isn’t he??*It was the most infuriating cliffhanger of Game of Thrones Season 5.*Now Kit Harington, who plays Jon Snow, may have just confirmed that he is back in action for the upcoming sixth season.
