David Letterman takes a bow
After more than three decades on the air, David Letterman is saying goodbye to late night. He's hosted everyone from presidents to Oscar winners to tabloid queens over the course of 6,028 broadcasts. There were Top 10 lists galore and Stupid Pet Tricks, Will It Float? and Know Your Cuts of Meat. And awestruck interviews with beautiful women, lots of them. Here's what the celebrities who sat beside him remember, calling him "naughty" (Scarlett Johannson), "never not interesting" (Tom Brokaw) and "sharp" (Jake Gyllenhaal). For his penultimate show, living comedic legend Bill Murray climbed out of a cake and living musical legend Bob Dylan performed a hauntingly beautiful song. What will tonight's ultimate show entail (other than tears)? Tune in to CBS at 11:35 p.m. ET and follow live tweets from @usatodaylife to find out.

Oil spill mucks up the ocean near Santa Barbara, Calif.
California just can't catch a break, it seems. First came the drought. Now comes an oil spill. And we learned today that the spill, off the Santa Barbara coast, could be worse than initially thought. The pipeline was running at a rate of 2,000 barrels an hour — equivalent to 84,000 gallons, said Plains All American Pipeline LP official Darren Palmer. That would be a lot more than the initial estimate of 21,000 gallons, although we still don't know how much actually spilled. We do know there are 9 miles of oil slicks. How scenic. The broken 24-inch onshore pipeline spewed oil for several hours yesterday before it was shut off. The company has taken responsibility for the spill and the cleanup, which is already underway.

Dave Zaniboni of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department says the pipeline on the land near Refugio State Beach broke Tuesday and spilled oil into a culvert that ran under the U.S. 101.*(Photo: Kenneth Song, The News-Press, via AP)

Osama bin Laden was a reader of books and writer of love letters
What was Osama bin Laden reading? If you guessed the Quran, you'd be right. If you guessed a Time article on America Online's stock, you'd also be right. The contents of bin Laden's "bookshelf" — the readings seized by SEAL Team 6 when they raided his compound and killed him in 2011 — were released today in an effort by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to increase transparency. Here's what else was on Osama's reading list: The 9/11 Commission Report and several Congressional Research Service reports on al-Qaeda, Iraq and Afghanistan; several non-fiction books, including Obama's Wars by Bob Woodward, and a how-to guide on guerrilla air defense; Businessweek, Time, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report and Popular Science. Oh, and a gushing love letter he wrote one of his wives.

Traders' chatroom exchanges give some insight into today's big bank guilty pleas
"if you aint cheating, you aint trying." "[Y]es, the less competition the better." Those excerpts from a transcript of a chatroom exchange involving a Barclays employee and a group of currency traders dubbed "The Cartel." Perhaps an apt name. Federal prosecutors say Euro-U.S dollar traders at Citicorp, JPMorgan, Barclays and RBS used an electronic chat room and coded language to manipulate benchmark exchange rates of the two currencies in ways that benefited their own trading positions. Those banks today agreed to plead guilty to criminal charges and pay more than $5 billion in collective penalties. (Another bank, Switzerland's UBS, has agreed to plead guilty to manipulating key interest rates and will pay a separate criminal penalty of $203 million.) It's rare for banks to plead guilty to wrongdoing — this is the first time in more than two decades that major players in the financial industry have admitted to criminal wrongdoing on such a scale.

Secretive space plane begins its secret mission after not-secret launch
A secret space plane launched today from Cape Canaveral, so the rest of this blurb is classified. Just kidding. Here's what's not a secret: An Atlas V rocket shot into the sky today with the Air Force's X-37B space plane and 10 small satellites aboard. The launch appeared to be off to a good start, but the broadcast of the launch blacked out about five minutes in, because secrets. It's the fourth X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle mission. The last one was in orbit nearly two years before landing in California, autonomously, of course. The X-37B's mission is said to be supporting national defense. The Air Force did say the mini-shuttle is carrying a propulsion experiment and a NASA materials science experiment. So that's cool. The launch was the 54th by United Launch Alliance's Atlas V, which is expected to launch astronauts in a Boeing capsule from Cape Canaveral within two or three years.
