Scientists tell us there's evidence of salty water on Mars
Greetings, Earthlings. There is big news from Mars. Scientists have found evidence of recent water activity. And? "It suggests that it would be possible for there to be life today on Mars," NASA's science mission chief, John Grunsfeld, said at a news conference. AMAZING. We already knew about frozen water. But now it looks like there are areas that were wet, or at least damp, with salty liquid as recently as last year. Here's a look at other coolness happening on Mars.
Good luck tonight, Trevor Noah
We still miss you, Jon Stewart. Trevor Noah, we really don't know you. But we're looking forward to the opportunity — and for the return of the Daily Show. Given that there's plenty of news on this fine Monday, we bring you three stories we hope Noah will get into his premier episode (or at least sometime this week.) 1. The U.N. General Assembly. It started JUST in time for Noah's Comedy Central debut. Coincidence? We think not. 2. The European migrant crisis. We would love to see Noah, like Daily Show alum John Oliver, spend some time on international stories that need more attention. And since Noah isn't American, we think this will probably be the case. 3. The 2016 election (but hold the Trump) Yeah, Donald Trump jokes are funny. But please tell us other jokes. The Daily Show airs on Comedy Central at 11 p.m. ET.

Trevor Noah will take over for Jon Stewart as the host of the Daily Show starting in late September. Stewart stepped down from the role after 16 years.
Congratulations, America. You pulled off a smooth papal visit
When Pope Francis departed for Rome on Sunday night, there was a collective sigh of relief. The pontiff had made it through a six-day, three-city historic U.S. visit without major incident. Francis' last official words: "May God bless you all — God bless America." Indeed, he touched thousands through acts and events both big and small. What distinguishes him, says USA TODAY's Rick Hampson, is his clarity. Yet, when he stopped his Fiat to bless a boy in a wheelchair, when he skipped lunch with lawmakers, when he hugged an inmate — that's when Francis stole our hearts. For many, Pope Francis has made memories that will last a lifetime on this first visit to the United States. Here are some of his most touching moments. VPC
Fugitive's lover who smuggled hacksaw blades in ground meat is going to prison herself
Prison worker Joyce Mitchell helped Richard Matt and David Sweat escape from the state prison in Dannemora, N.Y., back in June. On Monday, the tearful seamstress was sentenced to 2 1/3 to 7 years in prison for her role in the ill-advised plot that culminated in a three-week-long manhunt, the death of Matt and the capture of Sweat. "If I could take it all back, I would," Mitchell said, sobbing.

Jonathan Papelbon choked Bryce Harper and now Papelbon's season is over
Closer Jonathan Papelbon is probably the least popular man in Washington after choking Bryce Harper in the dugout during Sunday's game against the Phillies. Tons of Nats fans want Papelbon off the team, even making pledges on Twitter to charity if the team would just cut him, already! The Nationals on Monday suspended him four games without pay. Papelbon also has a three-game suspension for hitting Orioles player Manny Machado with a retaliation pitch. The Nats have seven games left, meaning Papelbon won't pitch again this season.
