New video of South Carolina shooting shows lead-up to man's slaying
We're learning more about what happened before Walter Scott was fatally shot in South Carolina this past weekend. Authorities released a patrol car dash camera video today showing Scott getting out of his car and running away after a traffic stop moments before he was shot by North Charleston police officer Michael Slager. The video doesn't show an altercation. He was stopped because his taillight was out. The video shows the officer making the stop and standing at the side of the dark Mercedes sedan while asking Scott for his license and other paperwork. The officer then walks back to his car. Scott tentatively gets out from his car, then gets back in. Moments later he opens the door again and runs off the side of the screen. A separate video shot by a bystander that was released earlier this week shows Slager, who is white, chasing Scott, who is black, and shooting him multiple times. Scott died at the scene. Families of victims and civil rights advocates wonder if this case will be enough to spur real change. "They use this narrative all the time," attorney Benjamin Crump said. "'I was in fear of my life. I felt threatened. They reached for my weapon.' That's how they justify killing us. Now that it's been exposed with this case, will America challenge it?"

There's been another listeria outbreak. How scared should we be?
It feels like every time we turn around, there's another case of listeria contamination. Blue Bell ice cream, Amy's organic meals, Bidart Bros.' caramel apples. Today, it's 30,000 cases of Sabra's Classic Hummus. So how worried should we be? It depends. Officially, listeria sickens just 1,600 Americans a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most people with listeriosis get better on their own. But the bacteria can invade the bloodstream, brain or spinal cord in people whose immune systems are too weak to fight it off. So pregnant women, their newborns, people older than 64 or people with weakened immune systems, like patients with cancer or HIV, are way more susceptible. Listeria is the third-leading cause of death from food poisoning, according to the CDC.
You may have to say goodbye to your neighborhood Walgreens

This is what cost-reduction looks like. Walgreens, the largest U.S. drugstore chain, said today it's closing about 200 U.S. stores. So yes, that may mean your corner drugstore could shutter, but 200 stores is only 2% of the company's 8,232 drugstores, so not a huge number when put in perspective. Walgreens announced the closings, part of a $500 million cost-cutting initiative, in its first earnings report since it merged with European drug retailer Alliance Boots last year. Walgreens spokesman Philip Caruso said the company hasn't decided which stores will close, but it's "not focusing on any specific geographic area." Caruso also said there's "no hard timeline" for when the stores will close.

NCAA players head to NBA draft

Kentucky basketball might have lost its bid for perfection, but the 2015 Wildcats might not be done making history. They could break their own modern-era NBA draft record of six picks in 2012 by having seven selected this June. Seven Kentucky players with eligibility remaining — Karl-Anthony Towns, Willie Cauley-Stein, Devin Booker, Dakari Johnson, Trey Lyles, and Aaron and Andrew Harrison — all stated their intent today to enter the NBA draft. With the departures, Kentucky is losing 85% of its points, 83.2% of its blocked shots, 78.3% of its steals, 77% of its rebounds and 69.6% of its assists from the 2014-15 season. We also learned today that Duke freshman and star player Jahlil Okafor is entering the draft. Coach K is on board.
Taylor Swift goes public with a very private family matter
Taylor Swift is sharing some serious and upsetting news. The pop star said today her mom's been diagnosed with cancer. At Christmas, Swifty asked her mom to get screened. She agreed, and was diagnosed. In a Tumblr post, Swift writes, "The results came in, and I'm saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer. I'd like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know." Swift says her mom wanted to urge fans to remind their parents to get checked to "possibly lead to an early diagnosis and an easier battle." If you want to know just how close Swift and her mom are, watch the video below. #PrayforMamaSwift.
