Our hearts still sink when we hear 'Sandy Hook'
"I was shot five years ago in January. But it is in December, during the season of lighting candles and pulling loved ones close, that the toll of gun violence on America's families hurts the most," Gabby Giffords writes in a column for USA TODAY. Her words were a poignant reminder of the third anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting that killed 20 children and six school staffers in Newtown, Conn., in 2012. Flags across the state were flying at half-staff today to honor the memory of the 26 killed. But from coast to coast, many people remember it like it was yesterday. "My heart still breaks with yours," Judith Diesenhaus told us. Joeisha Harris remembers, "I was at work … I started to think about my children and I called their school." Hear Americans discuss gun violence in their communities in the podcast below.
About that hoverboard you wanted ...
Well, it's gonna be tough. But it's not for the reason you might expect. Several models, including ones made by Swagway, no longer appear on Amazon's website, although there are still a handful of hoverboards available for purchase. The removal of hoverboards follows growing concerns over whether the devices — arguably the hottest holiday gift — present serious safety issues. The Consumer Product Safety Commission tells NBC News it's investigating at least 10 reports of fires related to hoverboards. Meanwhile, all of the USA's largest airlines have banned the boards from flights because the devices use lithium-ion batteries, making them dangerous to transport. So, about that hoverboard you wanted ...

Stabbing victim changes his story; it wasn't ISIL afterall
The teacher was stabbed, but not by a member of the Islamic State. Apprently he made that part up. The yet-to-be-named teacher, 45, said a masked assailant attacked him in a preschool in a Paris suburb with a box cutter and scissors. The incident set off a manhunt. French media, citing police, said the teacher was injured but was expected to survive. He was stabbed in the throat and side and the assailant escaped. The false report comes as France remains under state-of-emergency anti-terrorism legislation following the attacks on Nov. 13 that killed 130 people.

For economists, this week is pretty much the Super Bowl
Except instead of the Vince Lombardi Trophy, you get a higher interest rate. This week the Fed is practically certain to raise interest rates for the first time in nearly a decade. But before it acts, the Fed will review a final batch of economic reports on inflation, housing and industrial production. Fed policymakers have signaled they're likely to raise their benchmark rate by a quarter of a percentage point from the current near-zero level. That means good news for your savings account, but you'll wish you would have applied for that mortgage yesterday. With inflation still low and the global economy still shaky, officials will likely reiterate that rate increases will be gradual. Think, about a percentage point each year.

#Mustread: Where is the water?
Groundwater is disappearing beneath cornfields in Kansas, rice paddies in India, asparagus farms in Peru and orange groves in Morocco. An investigation by USA TODAY and The (Palm Springs, Calif.) Desert Sun examines the stories of people on four continents confronting questions of how to safeguard their aquifers for the future — and in some cases, how to cope as the water runs out.

See how much water is drawn from wells each year in the United States. In places around the world, supplies of groundwater are rapidly vanishing. As aquifers decline and wells begin to go dry, people are being forced to confront a growing crisis. Ramon Padilla
