The father of a Muslim-American Army captain killed in Iraq offered a challenge to Donald Trump during a speech at the Democratic National Convention. Khizr Kahn's son, Humayun Khan, was killed during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004.

As the feud between the Republican nominee and Khizr and*Ghazala*Khan (the parents of a fallen soldier) continues, Donald Trump is being criticized from Republicans and Democrats alike. How exactly did we get to this point? Let's break it down:

Khan blasts Trump's 'ignorance,' as feud continues

[h=2]December 2015[/h]After Donald Trump called for a temporary ban on Muslims coming into the United States,*Khizr Khan, whose son*Humayun Khan*was killed in Iraq in 2004, spoke out against the GOP front-runner. In an interview with*Vocativ, Kahn said Trump’s values did not represent American values.
“We are proud American citizens. It’s the values [of this country] that brought us here, not our religion. Trump’s position on these issues do not represent those values,” Khan, a Pakistani-born Muslim,*said.
“We still wonder what made him take those 10 steps [towards the car],” Khan continued, describing the incident where his son lost his life after a suicide bombing. “Maybe that’s the point where all the values, all the service to country, all the things he learned in this country kicked in. It was those values that made him take those 10 steps. Those 10 steps told us we did not make [a] mistake in moving to this country. These were the values we wanted to adopt. Not religious values, human values,” he said.

While paying their respects to Capt. Humayun Khan at his grave marker at Arlington National Cemetery, strangers of different faiths came together to pray for each other and their country. USA TODAY

Hillary Clinton paid tribute to Khan’s son in late December,*saying that Capt. Humayun Khan represented “the best of America.” She quoted Khan’s line about the 10 steps from the Vocativ interview.
[h=2]July 28, 2016[/h]Khan spoke on the final night of the Democratic convention, giving a moving tribute to his son before bashing Trump.
"If it was up to Donald Trump, he never would have even been in America," Khan said. "He vows to build walls and ban us from this country. Donald Trump, you're asking Americans to trust you with their future. Let me ask you, have you even read the United States Constitution?"
Khan held up a pocket Constitution and offered to lend it to Trump.
"You have have sacrificed nothing, and no one," he finished.
[h=2]July 29,2016[/h]The Khans appeared in an interview with MSNBC's The Last Word.*Ghazala Khan*said that being on stage was very hard "because I cannot see my son's picture, I cannot even come in the room where his pictures are."
Khan made an emotional plea for*Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., to "repudiate Trump."
[h=2]July 30, 2016[/h]In an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, Trump fought back against the idea that he hadn’t made any sacrifices.
"Who wrote that? Did Hillary's script writers write it?" Trump said. Khan declined the use of a speechwriter,*according to Politico
"I think I've made a lot of sacrifices. I work very, very hard,” Trump said.
Trump also went after Ghazala Khan, who stood beside her husband during his speech but did not speak. Trump implied that she may not have been allowed to speak because of her religion.
Ghazala Khan has since fired back, saying that she had been invited to speak but was too upset to do so.

[h=2]July 31, 2016[/h]Khizr Khan said on CNN's State of the Union that Trump had a "black soul."
Meanwhile, Trump attempted to tamp down the controversy by saying the debate was*about “radical Islamic terror.” He also called the captain a hero before saying that Khan had “viciously attacked” him.
Captain Khan, killed 12 years ago, was a hero, but this is about RADICAL ISLAMIC TERROR and the weakness of our "leaders" to eradicate it!

I was viciously attacked by Mr. Khan at the Democratic Convention. Am I not allowed to respond? Hillary voted for the Iraq war, not me!

Later that night, Trump’s running*mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, issued a statement:

"Donald Trump and I believe that Captain Humayun Khan is an American hero and his family, like all Gold Star families, should be cherished by every American.
Captain Khan gave his life to defend our country in the global war on terror. Due to the disastrous decisions of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, a once stable Middle East has now been overrun by ISIS. This must not stand.
By suspending immigration from countries that have been compromised by terrorism, rebuilding our military, defeating ISIS at its source and projecting strength on the global stage, we will reduce the likelihood that other American families will face the enduring heartbreak of the Khan family.
Donald Trump will support our military and their families and we will defeat the enemies of our freedom."

[h=2]Aug. 1, 2016[/h]The feud continued, with*Khizr Khan*appearing on multiple morning shows blasting the GOP nominee.
“This candidate amazes me," Khan said on NBC's*Today*show. "His ignorance — he can get up and malign the entire nation, the religions, the communities, the minorities, the judges and yet a private citizen in this political process. … I cannot say what I feel?"
For his part, Trump did little to defuse the uproar.
Mr. Khan, who does not know me, viciously attacked me from the stage of the DNC and is now all over T.V. doing the same - Nice!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 1, 2016

This story is not about Mr. Khan, who is all over the place doing interviews, but rather RADICAL ISLAMIC TERRORISM and the U.S. Get smart!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 1, 2016

Meanwhile, Arizona Sen. John McCain, once the target of a controversial Trump critique himself, denounced the Republican nominee's latest remarks, saying he hoped "Americans understand that the remarks do not represent the views of our Republican Party, its officers, or candidates.”
