Almost 1 million Trek bikes are being recalled in the United States and Canada after accidents that left one rider paralyzed, another with a fractured wrist and a third with facial injuries.
Which models are being recalled?
All Trek bicycles from model years 2000 through 2015 that are equipped with front disc brakes and a black or silver quick release lever on the front wheel hub that opens far enough to contact the disc brake. Bicycles with front quick release levers that do not open a full 180 degrees from the closed position are not included in this recall.
If I have one of these bikes, what should I do?
Stop using the bicycle immediately and contact an authorized Trek retailer for free installation of a new quick release on the front wheel. You can reach the company's safety and recall hotline at 800-373-4594.
What can happen?
When an open quick release lever on the bike's front wheel hub comes into contact with the front disc brake assembly, the front wheel can come to a sudden stop or separate from the bicycle.
And there's a bonus.
Trek will provide each owner who participates in the recall with a $20 coupon that is redeemable by Dec. 31 toward any Bontrager merchandise.
