WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. John Dingell has been hospitalized with a hip fracture but his wife says he is expected to recover.
Dingell, 88, was hospitalized in Washington on Friday morning, the day after casting what was the last vote in a record-setting 59-year career. The Dearborn Democrat's office said at the time the hospitalization was taken as a precaution.
Today, Dingell's wife, Debbie, posted on Facebook that her husband, who suffered a fall last week, has a hairline hip fracture "which he walked around on for a couple of days before it was discovered."
"Thankfully, no surgery is needed but it's going to take time to heal. We are in the process of figuring things out but it will be a few weeks before they will allow him to travel," Debbie Dingell wrote.
The two had planned to return to Michigan today. The House took what were expected to be the final roll call votes of the 113th Congress on Thursday night.
Dingell, who went to Congress in 1955 and is its longest serving member ever, announced his retirement early this year. His wife won election in November to replace him in the next Congress, which will be sworn in Jan. 6.
