Snow and dangerously high winds roared into New England for the fourth time in less than a month Sunday, threatening to deliver life-threatening blizzards, hurricane-force winds, whiteouts and widespread power outages.
The storm is the latest blow to a region that has already seen more than 6 feet of snow in some areas.
A blizzard warning was in effect for coastal areas from Connecticut to Maine through Monday morning, promising 8 to 14 inches in southern New England and up to 2 feet in Maine.
A blast of cold will follow, with lows of minus-10 degrees forecast in some areas Sunday night.
National Weather Service meteorologist William Babcock said road conditions will be dangerous as steady, widespread winds whip the relatively dry snow around.
"On Sunday, the best thing people can do is stay home, stay indoors," he said.
During an afternoon briefing Saturday, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker called it "a Cinderella evening" and urged residents going out for Valentine's Day to be off the roads by midnight so that crews can plow and remove snow on Sunday. He said forecasts call for a foot of snow in parts of eastern Massachusetts.
Snow blown about by strong winds "will make driving virtually impossible. Unless you have a really good reason to be out tomorrow, we would urge you all to stay off the roads," he said.
The forecast for another round of heavy snow is disheartening enough for winter-weary Boston and coastal New England, but the storm will also usher in another Arctic air mass that will dip southward Sunday, bringing some of the coldest temperatures of the year as far south as Florida.
Boston, which has already endured 42 inches of snow this month and three major winter storms, plans to simply hunker down, with the area transit lines shutting down completely Sunday.
Nearly 400 Sunday flights were canceled at Boston's Logan International Airport, and none were scheduled Sunday morning.
Gov. Charlie Baker urged motorists to stay off roads during the storm, but he stopped short of an outright travel ban. Speaking Saturday, he said people probably had until midnight for storm preparations or Valentine's Day celebrations.
"It's a Cinderella evening to enjoy your loved ones," he said.
Babcock said gusts could max out at 75 mph — hurricane territory — on Cape Cod. Officials warned of possible power outages, and north-facing or vulnerable coastal areas could suffer flooding and beach erosion, the National Weather Service said.
Winter storm warnings extended west into Michigan and Ohio, where whiteout conditions led to a pileup on the Ohio Turnpike that killed at least two people. Another crash involving several tractor-trailers was reported on Interstate 70 just west of Columbus, and a storm-related crash on the New York Thruway south of Buffalo killed one person.
Business groups said weather-related travel woes have cut into sales by up to 80% for some restaurants and retailers leading up to Valentine's Day, a holiday that usually generates about $500 million in business.
