In a season in which police in the United States are coming under some criticism, a dashcam video out of Arizona has been released that is adding to the debate.
The police department in Marana, Ariz., has released video that shows a police cruiser charging diagonally across a road and ramming a suspect.
The video is from Feb. 19 when Police Officer Michael Rapiejko slammed his cart into suspect Mario Valencia in an effort to stop Valencia who was suspected in a multi-incident crime spree, according to KVOA. Valencia allegedly stole a rifle from a Walmart, led a home invasion, robbed a convenience store and fired a shot at police with the stolen firearm, according to KVOA and Tucson News Now.
Valencia was taken to the University of Arizona Medical Center and remained there two days before being transferred to jail, Tucson News Now reported.
Marana Police Chief Terry Rozema shared his thoughts on the incident with KVOA.
"The thought is to take a shot, which would have been completely justified ... If I miss, he is going to turn and start firing on us and we are at a big disadvantage at that point," Rozema said. "These officers have no choice but to begin firing."
