Secretary of State John Kerry says he'll be meeting this week with Israel's Prime Minister and the Palestinian President in a bid to ease tensions in the Middle East. Kerry also discussed the efforts in battling violent extremism (Oct. 18) AP

Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday that he will meet with*Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas this week in an effort to quell a*wave of deadly*violence that has swept across Israel in recent weeks.
Kerry, speaking at a luncheon in Paris, said he will meet with Netanyahu in Germany and then with Abbas and King Abdullah in Jordan.
The violence continued Sunday: Hours after Kerry spoke, several people were wounded in an attack at the central bus station in the southern Israeli town of Beersheba. The Israeli news website Arutz Sheva said seven people were injured, one critically and two seriously. One attacker was killed and another was in critical condition, the website said.
About 40 Palestinians and eight Israelis*have died in the month-long surge in violence. Many*Israelis have been victims of stabbings, and*Netanyahu has criticized a U.S. assessment that Israel has used excessive force in response to the violence.
The leader of Lebanon’s Shiite Hezbollah group,*Hassan Nasrallah, on Sunday*called the unrest a “renewed*intifada"*carried out by a new generation of Palestinians who believe in resistance.
Also Sunday,*300 soldiers were deployed to patrol public transportation stations, buses and major traffic arteries in Jerusalem.*Soldiers are expected to bolster police forces pending establishment of a civilian security force for public transportation.*Other recent security measures include concrete barriers and random checkpoints established*near some Arab neighborhoods in Jerusalem.

Israelis kill 4 Palestinians as violence surges
The Israeli military*said it removed 30 Jews who illegally entered a West Bank holy site Saturday night*to protest the burning of the holy site by Palestinians. Violence erupted at the site,*revered by some Jews as the tomb of the biblical figure*Joseph,*after*the 30 were confronted by Palestinians, Israeli*media reported.
The military removed the Jewish worshipers in consultation with Palestinian security forces. One worshiper was lightly wounded and five were sentenced to four days of house arrest, Arutz Shiva*reported.
Palestinians set fire to the holy site*late Thursday after the militant group Hamas called for a "day of rage" against Israel. The blaze was extinguished by Palestinian security force, and Abbas condemned the attack and called for an investigation.

Joseph's Tomb torched: Who was Joseph?
The violence*began*over the*Jewish New Year, fueled by rumors that Israel was plotting to take over Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site, a hilltop area*revered by Jews as the*Temple Mount*and home to the*Al-Aqsa Mosque. Israel has vehemently denied the claim.
Two weeks later*Abbas further fueled tensions, tell*the United Nations his government would no longer honor agreements with Israel aimed at*a permanent peace and would force Israel to take over responsibility for governing*Palestinian territories.
Recent surveys released by*the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey show growing despair by Palestinians over their future. Two-thirds of Palestinians want Abbas to step down and a clear majority favors a return to an*armed rebellion*—*intifada.
Kerry did not discuss details of his trip. The Associated Press, citing U.S. officials, said*Kerry probably will be in Germany on Thursday and Jordan on Saturday. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss Kerry's travel plans.
Pope Francis called for an end to the violence*in Israel on Sunday, saying the moment called for "much courage and much strength of spirit to say no to hatred and revenge."
