More than 20 students at a Virginia high school were suspended Thursday after wearing clothes emblazoned with<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Confederate flags, according to multiple<span style="color: Red;">*</span>media reports.
Montgomery County Public Schools spokeswoman Brenda Drake told
WSLS-TV in Roanoke that 22 or 23 students at Christiansburg<span style="color: Red;">*</span>High violated the dress code and refused to comply when given the opportunity. All were issued one-day, in-school suspensions, Drake said.
She told the TV station that most of the suspensions were changed to out-of-school suspensions after many of the students became disruptive.
School district officials did not immediately return a call for comment from USA TODAY.
On the first day of the school year, three students at the school were<span style="color: Red;">*</span>asked by Principal David Siers to remove Confederate flag decals from their cars, which they did, the local
News Messenger reports. The newspaper notes that the<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Confederate symbol was also banned from cars starting this school year. Students were required to sign an agreement to follow the rules in order to obtain a parking pass.
The other three high schools in the district have no such policy, the
Messenger says.
Display of Confederate flags has come under increased scrutiny since a June shooting rampage left nine dead at an iconic black church in South Carolina. The shooter, Dylann Roof, made racist rants and had posted pictures on Facebook of himself with Confederate flags. A month later the South Carolina Legislature had the flag removed from Statehouse grounds.
