Wisconsin Gov. Scott*Walker did not generate a massive amount of Facebook chatter regarding his presidential campaign announcement Monday, but those people who were talking about him did so with a higher level of intensity than all but one other candidate in the race.
Facebook announced Tuesday that 679,000 unique users on the social media platform generated 1.6 million interactions — likes, posts, comments and shares — relating to Walker’s announcement. Neither of those numbers is particularly remarkable among the Day One results for other candidates on their announcement days. Hillary Clinton generated over 10*million interactions from 4.7 million unique users and Donald Trump generated 6.4 million interactions from 3.4 million users on their announcement days.
But only Texas Sen. Ted Cruz generated a higher ratio of interactions per user than Walker. Cruz launched his campaign March 23, becoming*the first major Republican candidate to announce his presidential ambitions, and generated 5.5 million interactions from 2.1 million users, a ratio of 2.62 interactions per user. Walker generated around 2.36 interactions per user.
“It should not be used without the context of absolute volume, but it does measure intensity of his audience,” said Alan Rosenblatt, senior vice president at turner 4D, a digital advocacy firm.
This data also makes no effort to gauge the sentiment of Facebook comments, so more chatter does not necessarily mean supportive chatter. Thus this*metric gets filed under Interesting but not Decisive.
The chart below, using data provided by Facebook, ranks the announced candidates by engagement ratio.
