The manhunt is officially over as David Sweat was taken into police custody, thanks in large part to Sgt. Jay Cook. New York Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico says the escapees may have used pepper to throw police dogs off their scent. VPC

Officials and the public are praising New York State Police Sgt. Jay Cook, the officer who shot escaped murderer David Sweat in what N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo called a "very courageous act."
Sunday evening, the trooper had his own hashtag on Twitter (#jaycook) as users lauded his bravery, and maybe shared a brush with fame.
Sweat who was shot twice, was being transported Sunday evening to Albany Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center in the state capital, according to medical spokesman Jeffrey Gordon.
On Sunday at about 3:20 p.m. ET, Cook spotted a "suspicious man" walking along a road in Constable, near the Canadian border.
Sgt. Cook chased Sweat, but couldn't catch him, then decided to fire his weapon at the escapee, Cuomo said. He "was alone when this happened."

Two photos have emerged that appear to be of Cook from New York State Police's Facebook page, taken at the New York State fair in August 2014. Grateful fans are posting messages of appreciation as the images begin to spread online.
Cook is part of Troop B, which covers Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton and St. Lawrence counties.
