A Russian charter plane carrying 224 people crashed in a mountainous part of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula Saturday, killing all on board, Egyptian officials said. The Islamic State (IS) group affiliate in Egypt claimed that it downed the plane.

People from around the world are reeling from the news that a Russian airliner crashed in Egypt's Sinai peninsula early Saturday, killing all 224 people aboard.
Airport authorities said all 224 people aboard Metrojet Flight 7K9268 en route from the resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh<span style="color: Red;">*</span>were Russian, the Russian news agency RIA reports. The passengers included 17 children, aged 2 to 17, according to Russian authorities.
By Saturday morning, #7K9268 was trending on Twitter with more than 43,000 tweets dedicated to the hashtag.
The Russian government tweeted to assure the public that officials will work hard to support people affected by the crash. "The crash will be thoroughly investigated. Everyone affected by the tragedy will receive assistance #7K9268," the government account said.
Secretary of State John Kerry, who was on an official visit to the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan, expressed his condolences to Putin and the Russian people, the Associated Press reports. "We don't know any details about it, but obviously the initial reports represent tremendous tragedy, loss, and we extend our condolences to the families and all those concerned.''
Prominent civil rights activist Rev. Jesse Jackson tweeted a message of solidarity saying, "Pray for the families of Russian plane crash victims. Flight #7K9268 in #Sinai."
The crash also made many reflect on traveling by air. "Aircrafts should not fall," one woman on Twitter wrote in Russian, according to Google translator. Another woman tweeted, "My deepest condolences to the victims' families."
Many messages were packed with emotion as authorities continued to release details. "Deep condolence to families of #7K9268 passengers and crew," one woman tweeted. "Nothing should be taken granted when you board an airplane."
Several airlines also tweeted messages of solidarity.
