George Zimmerman, who was acquitted in 2012 of second-degree murder in the killing of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin, will not face prosecution on aggravated-assault charges because the alleged victim, his ex-girlfriend, recanted her statement, the Florida State Attorney's office said Friday, according to local media reports.
Zimmerman, 31, was arrested in Lake Mary, Fla., earlier this month following an alleged fight at his residence.
"While it is clear that the officers had probable cause to arrest Mr. Zimmerman which was affirmed by the circuit court judge at initial appearances, the subsequent recantation by the victim of her initial statement along with new documents provided by the victim and her attorney precludes my office from proceeding further," State Attorney Phil Archer said, the Orlando Sentinel reports

Officials said the alleged victim initially told police that Zimmerman had thrown a wine bottle and cellphone at her, but later denied the allegations, WKMG reports.
Prosecutors said they could not proceed with any charges without another witness or other corroborating evidence.
Since his high-profile acquittal in the Trayvon Martin case, Zimmerman has had three other encounters with the Lake Mary police.
In September 2013, Zimmerman's estranged wife, Shellie Zimmerman, called 911 to tell police he had punched her father and was threatening her with a gun. She opted not to press charges.
In the second incident, which occurred in November 2013, Zimmerman was arrested and accused of domestic violence by girlfriend Samantha Scheibe, who later said investigators had misinterpreted her statements and dropped charges.
In September 2014, Zimmerman was involved in an incident of road rage.
