1. French, German leaders push new peace plan for east Ukraine
French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday to discuss a peace plan for Ukraine. Pressure is mounting for Western countries to provide the war-ravaged Ukraine with the capacity to block further offensives from Russian-backed separatists. Hollande, who described the Ukraine conflict as a "war," said he and Merkel will travel to Moscow with a proposal "based on the territorial integrity of Ukraine."

Secretary of State John Kerry is urging Russia to commit to a diplomatic solution to the conflict in eastern Ukraine by halting its military aid for the separatists and backing a negotiated peace. He made the comments during a visit to Kiev. (Feb. 5) AP
2. The president ups American leadership in new strategy plan
The Obama administration is slated to release its latest National Security Strategy on Friday, a document that outlines the president's foreign policy priorities. "It sets out the principles and priorities to guide the use of American power, and it affirms America's leadership role within a rules-based international order," said Bernadette Meehan, spokeswoman for the National Security Council. "It reinforces our commitment to allies and partners and welcomes the constructive contributions of responsible rising powers." National Security Adviser Susan Rice will discuss the strategy in a Friday speech at the Brookings Institution.

3. Bob Dylan takes home yet another award
The legendary singer racks up another honor. Dylan will be named the Recording Academy's 2015 MusiCares Person of the Year on Friday. Dylan, a 10-time Grammy winner, joins a list of past honorees that includes Carole King, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and Barbra Streisand. A benefit concert featuring performances from Beck, the Black Keys and Tom Jones will ring in Dylan's honor just ahead of the Grammys on Sunday.

4. The Adrian Peterson saga continues
More than three months after his legal case closed in Texas, banished Minnesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson remains at the center of the fight between the NFL and its players association over personal conduct. That fight goes to federal court on Friday, when both sides argue on the NFL Players Association's motion to vacate the arbitration decision that upheld Peterson's suspension and reinstate him immediately. Peterson, 29, will attend Friday's hearing but isn't expected to speak.

5. Jobs numbers released
The Bureau of Labor Statistics will release its January jobs report on Friday morning. The report will show whether 2014's steady employment improvement has continued into the new year; the more jobs there are, the better off the economy is. According to Wall Street, the economy likely created 230,000 jobs last month, close to the 246,000 monthly average of 2014. Economists expect the unemployment rate to remain unchanged at 5.6%. The strength of the job market will influence policies from the Federal Reserve, which is expected to hike interest rates this year.
