Lawrence Phillips, a first-round draft pick for the St. Louis Rams in 1996,*will enter a plea in a California court Tuesday for the alleged strangulation of his cellmate. Phillips, 40, is currently serving a 31-year sentence for driving his car into three teenagers in 2006 and assaulting a former girlfriend in 2009. On April 11, Phillips' Kern Valley State Prison cellmate Damion Soward was found unresponsive inside the cell the two men were sharing. A month before, Phillips wrote a letter to his mother saying he thought his anger might lead to his death or someone else's. He faces life in prison if he is convicted of first-degree murder.
