President Obama will trade the Taj Mahal for a Saudi Arabian palace next week, cutting his trip to India short "to pay respects" to the new Saudi king, the White House said Saturday.
The schedule change came just hours before Obama departed Washington early Saturday morning for his three-day trip to India, with a short stopover in Germany.
As recently as Friday, White House press secretary Josh Earnest had said Vice President Biden would represent the United States in the Saudi capital of Riyadh, where the nation is mourning King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, who died Friday.

That changed overnight "as the president's and vice president's travel schedules became clearer," Earnest said. Instead, the president and first lady Michelle Obama will travel to Riyadh on Tuesday and visit the new king, Salman bin Abdulaziz, to "offer his condolences on behalf of the American people." Biden will remain in Washington.

The trip to Saudi Arabia means the Obamas will miss out on the Taj Mahal, the marble monument to love in Agra, India.
