Official: American, Australian kidnapped in Kabul

An American and an Australian have been kidnapped in the Afghan capital of Kabul, a government<span style="color: Red;">*</span>official said Monday.
Sediq Sediqqi,<span style="color: Red;">*</span>spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry, said the two were driving<span style="color: Red;">*</span>near the American University of Afghanistan on Sunday night when they were stopped by up to five gunmen wearing Afghan military uniforms, the Associated Press reported.
CNN reported that the two men<span style="color: Red;">*</span>were<span style="color: Red;">*</span>lecturers at<span style="color: Red;">*</span>the university.<span style="color: Red;">*</span>No one immediately claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.
The U.S. Embassy in Kabul<span style="color: Red;">*</span>confirmed<span style="color: Red;">*</span>that an American was abducted<span style="color: Red;">*</span>but did not release any further details.
“U.S. Embassy security officials are working closely with Afghan law enforcement and security colleagues and AUAF (American University of Afghanistan)<span style="color: Red;">*</span>to assist in the investigation into the kidnapping,” it said in a statement.
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed<span style="color: Red;">*</span>“the apparent kidnapping of an Australian in Kabul.”
“We continue to advise Australians not to travel to Afghanistan because of the extremely dangerous security situation, including the serious threat of kidnapping,” it said.
Three other foreigners who were abducted<span style="color: Red;">*</span>in Kabul during<span style="color: Red;">*</span>the past year were<span style="color: Red;">*</span>released. The location of<span style="color: Red;">*</span><span style="color: Red;">*</span>Kerry Jane Wilson, an<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Australian woman<span style="color: Red;">*</span>was kidnapped<span style="color: Red;">*</span>in the eastern city of Jalalabad in April is<span style="color: Red;">*</span>unknown.
