DALLAS — A teenager was taken into custody Monday for questioning in the drowning of her 3-month-old relative.
Dallas Police Sgt. Warren Mitchell said officers were called to the scene for a "person in danger" call at a Westmoreland Drive home near Interstate 20 around 6:20 a.m.
Dallas Fire-Rescue crews told police a 3-month-old girl was found dead inside the residence. Mitchell says she had been drowned but did not say where inside the home.
A police news release said a preliminary investigation suggests a teen relative drowned the child while the mother was away. Police are still waiting for an official cause of death from the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office.
A 14-year-old girl was taken into police custody. Mitchell didn't say how she and the victim are related. At this time she is being held for questioning and no charges have been filed.
Another teen relative was inside the home at the time and is being considered a witness, Mitchell said. Police do not believe she was involved in the child's death.
Officers who were visibly shaken are still working to secure the crime scene.
"It's tough, I mean, it breaks my heart any time, you know, you respond to a call and someone so innocent ... there's no one more than a child," Mitchell said.
