LOS ANGELES — Two people were shot and killed at the*University of California Los Angeles*on Wednesday,*and administrators*placed the school on lockdown as police searched for a possible shooter.
Campus Police Chief James Herren*confirmed the deaths in meeting with reporters gathered at the campus. He says he could not confirm reports that the victims were both male and wasn't sure whether one of the victims was the shooter.
"We still have*dozens of people in the*building who have sheltered*in place," Herren said.
Herren said the shooting took place inside*the Engineering IV building, also known as Boelter Hall. Los Angeles Police called a tactical alert, which puts all officers on alert citywide. Scores*of police armed with assault rifles and shotguns*were converging on the campus, some coming from more than 10 miles away.
"We have literally hundreds of police officers and agents on campus," Herren said. "We*are dedicated to ensuring*the safety of the community. It is something we have trained to do."
A construction worker interviewed by KTLA-TV said he saw a single shooter, possibly wearing body armor.
Aerial television coverage showed groups of heavily armed police running up stairs on the south side of the building. Some students were seen leaving buildings with their hands in the air, with police searching their backpacks.*Ambulances and fire crews were standing by as*a precaution.
Although other colleges already recessed classes for summer, UCLA's quarter is still underway.
