GREENVILLE, S.C. — The car once driven by an Easley man left for dead along the Interstate 85 roadside is a chief clue in the deadly shooting case — but what answers the car might hold aren't clear.
Anderson County authorities continued on Christmas Day to search for 44-year-old James Jerry Dobson II's light-colored Hyundai Elantra, which authorities say could be connected to the Christmas Eve morning shooting that left Dobson critically injured and 43-year-old Mary Marie Fowler of Greenville dead.
The car's exact connection isn't certain, Anderson County Sheriff's spokeswoman Sheila Cole said Thursday.
"If citizens see the vehicle, we would like them to simply call us," Cole said. The Anderson County Sheriff's Office can be reached at 864-260-4400. "We cannot assume, at this point, that the driver is a suspect in this case."

The Elantra is registered to South Carolina tag "KQI 543."
"The vehicle we are looking for was driven by Mr. Dobson in the past," Cole said, "but we do not know what vehicle he was driving at the time of the incident, or if he was even driving."

2 shooting victims along I-85 identified, critical

The two were found at about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday by the roadside of southbound I-85, between mile markers 16 and 17.
There was no vehicle nor weapon found at the scene, the location where authorities believe the two were shot, Cole said.
Fowler died Wednesday night at AnMed Health hospital.

Dobson was admitted in critical condition, and as of Thursday afternoon Cole said there has been no update on his condition.
Dobson's father, James Dobson, told The Greenville News on Wednesday evening that his son was on a respirator and sedated when he visited him at the hospital.
His son had a gunshot wound to the neck, the family said.
The elder Dobson said he bought his son the car last year.
The father said he didn't know Fowler or how his son, an out-of-work electrician who lived with him, would be connected to her. He said he last saw him on Monday.
